Rohr Edgemont, California
Final assembly for military programs.
Written and compiled by S. Poole
In 1979, to accommodate its increased production, the Riverside plant expanded into the city of Moreno Valley. Rohr Edgemont's facility celebrated their grand opening on May 7, 1979 and employed 74 people. The Edgemont facility supported the Riverside plant and was located 13 miles from Rohr Riverside. It was located at 22201 Alessandro Boulevard, near March Air Force Base, on 20 acres. One building was 76,200 square feet which included office space of 3,500 square feet and a lunchroom. The second building was 63,480 square feet with office space of 2,520 square feet. The parking lot could accommodate 160 vehicles. Rohr Edgemont included the CL-600 Apron, Access and Fan Duct operations; DC-10/A-300 and CNS Wing and Tail Cowls production; 747 Side Cowls and Fan Ducts departments, and 747 Skirt Beam and Fan Ducts departments (Rohr News, May 25, 1979). This facility consisted of offices, manufacturers, and warehouses on approximately 244,000 square feet and 37.5 acres (Goodrich, 2004; Rohr, p. 51). According to Jerry Van Hulle, there was a third building of approximately 104,000 square feet which may have used for storage.
Recently, on social media, I asked former employees where the Rohr plant was located. One Rohr retiree responded that this plant was across Alessandro "from where Day street begins. On the top right of the building is where the Rohr logo was painted." Another employee remembers that "Alessandro just past of old Hiwy395." Another employee stated that Rohr was located on "Alessandro Blvd right at the end of March Airbase runway, B52's took off right over the top of the buildings. almost as loud as a bunch of drop hammers" (October 22, 2021).
By July 1989, Rohr Edgemont (Moreno Valley) was employing 236 people (Douglass, 1993, p. C1).
By 1990, Rohr Edgemont (Moreno Valley) was working on the final assembly for commercial and military programs and employed 370 people (Rohr, 1990).
By August 1992, employment at Rohr Edgemont (Moreno Valley) at decreased down to 219 people, and had decreased again by August 1993 to 191 employees predicting that "payroll may shrink amid cutbacks" (Douglass, 1993, p. C1).

Author's note: I initially had an Edgemont page and a Moreno Valley page until a retiree told me that the Edgemont facility and the Moreno Valley facility were one and the same. And that (as of 2024) the old Rohr sign was still on the property which is a trucking facility now. Jerry Van Hulle confirmed for me that the Edgemont facility was in the city of Moreno Valley.
