John Harwood Malloy
Rohr Chula Vista
John was born December 27, 1904 in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Clarence and Jennie Malloy. He had 5 siblings.
John married Betty Sangster in 1925 in Northampton, Pennsylvania. In 1946, John received a letter from the Navy to report to duty. (The letter was recently found in a forgotten safe deposit box.)
He worked at Rohr Aircraft in Chula Vista, California. John was a General Foreman in Maintenance.
According to John's grandson Edward, John's in-laws Charles Butler and his wife Hazel Butler (maiden name Sangster), "lived right up “H“ Street off a private drive where it intersected Hilltop Drive. In fact, my Aunt & Uncle’s home still exists on what is now E. H street. Many great memories from that ranch."
"My grandparents home was built from scratch by my grandfather in the shape of a rectangular “O”. It was built behind my uncle's (Charles Butler) (Betty's brother in-law) home which was originally surrounded by lemon and orange groves up and down Hilltop. The Hilltop property had a water reservoir for the groves that was later converted to a ginormous swimming pool after my uncle started selling off property to developers. We used to head over there during summer as kids to play and swim in the water."
"Our mailman for about 15 years came by the house one day for a delivery. We got to talking and I found out that he lived below my grandparents off Hillcrest and used to ride his bike past their private driveway all the time! It’s a small world."
John also wrote an article for the July-August 1958 issue of Rohr Magazine titled "ROHR HOUSEKEEPING: Plant Maintenance Workers Take Chores in Stride That Would Stun a Housewife.”
John retired from Rohr in 1970. He passed away on December 23, 1976 in San Diego, California.
